What SecondMemory is
One memory that every AI can use, owned by you. It reads the mail, calendars, chats and meetings you connect, and keeps the people, plans and promises in them, each with the message it came from and the date.
Any AI that supports MCP (the Model Context Protocol), such as Claude, ChatGPT in developer mode or a coding agent, can ask it questions, with your permission. Your memory is sealed with keys your phone holds; see Security for how.
Getting started
- 1
Request an invite.
SecondMemory is invite only for now. Request an invite and we email you when it’s your turn.
- 2
Set up the phone app.
Install the SecondMemory app from the link in your invite and sign in. Setting it up makes your phone the keeper of your keys, and the place you approve things, with your fingerprint or face unlock.
- 3
Connect your mail and calendar.
Under Connections, in the app or on the web at app.secondmemory.io, add a Google or Microsoft account (Notion too). Choose whether each one belongs in Work or Personal. Newsletters, promotions and automatic messages are skipped, and you can see what was skipped.
- 4
Watch your world build.
Your memory reads back 90 days of mail, newest first, a few messages at a time. People, places, plans and promises appear as they are found, each with the message it came from. Your world shows the progress.
Want a feel for it first? Spin a sample world.
Connect an AI assistant
Give your AI app this server address. It signs in by itself, so there is no key to copy.
https://mcp.secondmemory.io/mcp
- Claude: Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, and paste the address. In Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http secondmemory https://mcp.secondmemory.io/mcp - ChatGPT: in developer mode, create a connector with the address as the MCP server URL and OAuth as the sign-in.
- Grok: on a paid plan, open grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom, and paste the address.
- Coding agents and other MCP apps: anything that supports MCP sign-in works the same way.
Then:
- A browser window opens. Sign in to SecondMemory.
- Choose the drawers it may open (Work, Personal) and what it may do: Read, Read and add, or Add only. If it asked, you can also switch on Let it ask for Private.
- Your phone asks you to confirm with your fingerprint or face unlock. Once you do, the AI is connected.
Access lasts 30 days at most, and the AI can narrow its own access but never widen it. See every AI you have connected, and take access back in one tap, under AI access. Every recall it makes is written to your access log.
The tools your AI gets
Your AI decides when to use these. You don’t need to name them, but it helps to know what each can do.
whoami
Any connectionSays which AI this is, which drawers it may read or add to, whether it may ask for Private, and when its access ends.
list_zones
Any connectionLists your drawers (Work, Personal, Private, and any company project drawers) and what this connection may do in each.
recall
ReadSearches the drawers this connection may read for facts, promises, people and past conversations, in plain words. Every result comes with its source and date. It can also answer as of a past date. It never searches Private.
remember
Read and add, or Add onlySaves a note, a decision or a summary of the conversation into Work, Personal or a project drawer. It is sealed to that drawer, then read for people, plans and promises, with the AI named as its source. Never into Private.
link
Read and addConnects two memories that recall returned, with a named relation such as works_at or follows_up. Both must be in the same drawer.
approve_promise
Read and addConfirms a promise found in someone else's email or on a web page, so it counts as real. The AI is told to do this only after you have confirmed it in the conversation.
request_private_access
“Let it ask for Private” onAsks to search Private once. Your phone gets an alert with no content; you see who is asking and why after your fingerprint or face unlock. It waits up to two minutes. A no, or no answer, means no access.
Drawers and Private
Your memory is kept in drawers, each sealed with its own key.
- Work and Personal open for the AIs you allow, in the way you allowed.
- Private is for the most personal things: health, family, money, dating. No AI ever gets standing access to it. When one asks, your phone shows an alert with no content; who is asking and why appear once you unlock with your fingerprint or face. Allow it once, allow that assistant for an hour, deny, or always deny. No answer in two minutes means no.
- Company project drawers appear when your organisation uses SecondMemory Enterprise.
Private things your phone sends wait, still sealed, until you unlock them on your phone.
Troubleshooting
- The approval didn’t arrive on my phone.
- Open the SecondMemory app: requests waiting for you pop up there, even when no notification came through. Check that notifications are on for the app. A request ends after a few minutes, and no answer counts as no, so if it has gone, start the connection again with your phone in hand.
- My phone says “Set up SecondMemory on this phone first”.
- That phone hasn’t been set up yet, so it can’t approve anything. Open the app, sign in and finish setting it up. Then show a new code on the web and scan it again.
- The AI says the connection is read-only.
- When you connected it, you chose Read. Remove it under AI access and connect it again, choosing Read and add.
- The AI can’t ask for Private.
- It needs “Let it ask for Private” switched on when you connect it. Even then, every ask waits for your phone.
- It stopped working after a month.
- An AI’s access lasts 30 days at most. Renew it under AI access, or connect it again.
- My world is still filling in.
- It reads back 90 days, newest first, a few messages at a time. New people and facts appear as they are found.
App privacy
What the app and the AI connector collect, why, and where it is kept is in the app privacy notice. For this website and invite requests, see the website privacy policy.
